The Dutch more commonly use the dipthong IJ instead of Y. In fact as rocket boy learns to write he will be taught to write what we would recognise as a small y, but puts dots on top of both parts to make it an ij, and that’s the 25th letter of the alphabet. And when the ij starts a word they are both capitalised (if need be). There are words in Dutch that begin with y, but again they’re all imported like yoga.

IJ is for ijs and ijsje.

IJs is ice, and the Dutch get all excited when it freezes as they enjoy going out and skating on whatever natural ice they can find that’s safe to do so. The general guidelines are never go onto ice on your own, and take it carefully until you’re sure it can hold your weight!

IJsje is ice cream, though it literally means little ice.
