mashed libraries 08

Yesterday I went to the mashed libraries unconference. I really enjoyed it and it was good to meet up with other “tinkerers”, especially as they all seemed very willing to lend a hand and help out when things weren’t quite working. It showed me the power of data and how easy it has become to combine and rework data into a different format to produce something useful. We were looking at Yahoo Pipes and went from a book search in amazon to book jacket covers and then we were trying to get a list of UK Libraries which held that book, but we had difficulties with the format of the field codes and how that worked in yahoo pipes. This morning I have done a bit more with it and have managed to embad it into Moodle, which although it didn’t look all that pretty does show that we will be able to use things out of yahoo pipes if needed. Now I just need to think of a practical application of it…

  1. Glad you enjoyed the day. In terms of using what you developed, it seems to me that if you plumbed the pipes so that it started from an RSS of ISBNs, and then displayed covers, and linked through to where it was, you’ve got a potential for a ‘reading list’ type app, with book covers, and a link to where you can get it locally?
